We are pleased to announce a new project outcome: our research article, “The impact of windage on the transport and accumulation of marine litter: A Lagrangian analysis in the Bay of Biscay”, has been published in the Journal of Marine Systems.

The study provides new insights into how wind forcing interacts with coastal convergence structures to shape the transport, accumulation, and beaching of floating marine litter—evidence that can support improved monitoring and mitigation strategies.

Key findings

  • Wind plays a significant role in the distribution and accumulation pathways of floating marine litter.
  • An alongshore anisotropic dispersion is observed in the southeastern Bay of Biscay.
  • Coastal coherent convergent structures are strongly altered by windage effect.
  • Windage increases the frequency of beaching events.
